In 1993, Catlett�s series of block prints known as �I am the Black Woman� was published in the book Lift Every Voice and Sing, illustrating the words of that beloved anthem. In 2020, that book inspired a group of rug hookers across the U.S. and Canada to embark on an ambitious project to adapt Catlett�s prints for hooked rugs, bringing her work to the attention of the broader public in general, and the rug hooking community in particular. We are pleased to present a generous sample of those rugs in this issue, along with reproductions of the Catlett prints that inspired them.
